raising readers has launched a campaign to encourage children to seek out their local library and get their first library card. A special book of stories by six Maine children's authors is currently being distributed as the book children receive at their five-year well-child visit.

On the inside cover of the book is a small card attached to a letter certifying that the child has been “Raised to be a Reader,” which the child can present to his local library in exchange for receiving his first library card.

raising readers staff is providing libraries with small stickers: “I was raised to be a reader,” which librarians can affix to the library card given to the child.

Library participation is completely voluntary and to date over 90 Maine Libraries are participating.

Many librarians who are participating in our library initiative have asked for a small Raising Reader PSA that they can place in their local library or school newsletters to show their support for our program and that they are participating in the library card initiative.
